To prevent water logging & urban flooding, blocked drains cleaned by SMB

July 16: The drainage system of Silchar town has been a major cause of concern for the residents. A day’s shower is sometimes enough to submerge major portions of the town. However, even citizens too ought to be more careful by not dumping plethora of garbage directly in the drains. On Friday, excavation of blocked drains were taken up by Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) to prevent water logging and urban flooding.

Expressing their views, the Municipal authorities stated that the big drains in Silchar since long have been a way for water to be drained out of the town. Due to lot of encroachments, temporary shops, residences drains directly opening into khals, public dumping of solid waste, these major drains get filled and surplus rainwater overflows and leads to urban flooding. The Executive Officer of SMB urged upon the public not to dump waste into drains directly.

Further during the day, as a routine exercise, garbage was cleared from Capital Point to Devdoot, Central Road, Bhowal, Gopal Ganj, Premtola, Civil Hospital, B.T.N point, Rangirkari, Sonai Road, 2nd link road & Hailakandi Road to National Highway etc.

Taking to their social media handle, SMB wrote, “Despite repeated requests to public, they are dumping in community centres making the town ugly. We need support of people subscribing to door to door collection to beautify our town. Such community dumping needs to be given up.”
