TMC writes to SP Cachar about ruckus created by transgenders in Silchar, appeals for strict action

Sept 11: What was almost non-visible in Silchar all these years has now become a major problem of this town. Groups of transgenders (Hijras) can now be seen going door to door in different parts of the town. These Hijras usually moves in small groups of 4 to 5 members and try to forcibly collect money from the house holds. It is in this connection that a Trinamool Congress (TMC) delegation wrote a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police, Cachar to take immediate action against the transgenders.

In the absence of the Police Super, the memorandum was handed over to the Additional Superintendent of Police (APS) on Thursday. In their memorandum, TMC alleged that these transgenders came to Silchar from outside and are creating ruckus in the town by threatening people. They also stated that a few days ago, a group of transgenders tried to kidnap a child from Das Colony.

Later on speaking with the media, Sajal Banik on behalf of TMC said, “Such instances are multiplying. These transgenders have come to Silchar from outside. The administration should take immediate step and take stringent actions against them or else drive them out of Silchar. People of Silchar have never earlier witnessed such a situation. Administration needs to wake up and take proper action before any major untoward incident takes place.” Also present in the delegation were Anupam Paul, Kushal Dutta, Abir Choudhury among others.
