There is no over-topping of water through Bethukandi, dyke is safe: Executive Engineer
July 4: With fresh rainfall, the water level of river Barak crossed the danger level for the 3rd time since May 2022 and reached 20.08 mtrs on Monday evening. However, since the last 6 hours till 10 PM on Monday, the water level at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar was reported to be steady.
Meanwhile, with the rising of water level panic spread among the people of Silchar town as they feared that water would rush in through the breached dyke at Bethukandi. However, on Monday evening, Executive Engineer of Water Resources Department informed that there is no over topping, though water level is above danger level. The closing of Bethukandi breach is going on in full swing.
He further stated that the preventive measures are still going on by dumping B-type bags inside the chamber of sluice gate and raising the ring bund to withstand river water pressure, if any. As the water level is now steady, so the situation is under control.
It needs mention here that District Administration, Cachar on Sunday night informed that the Sluice gate at Bethukandi has been closed. The area in front of breach has also been sealed by geo bags. Officers are on spot and on alert.
