Tabligi Jamaat & Bus from Ajmer major causes of rise in COVID cases in Assam: Dr. Harsh Vardhan

Union Health Minister holds video conference with Health Ministers of N.E. states

May 9: Union Health Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan interacted via video conference with Health Ministers & senior officials of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim on the current COVID-19 situation. As per sources, the sudden rise in the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Tripura and Assam was the main reason for organising this virtual meeting by the Union Health Minister on Saturday.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan during the video conference informed that the fatality rate in the country continues to be around 3.3 percent, while the recovery rate of the country has climbed upto 29.9 percent. He further said, “We do not anticipate a worst type of situation in our country like any other developed countries, but still we have prepared the country for the worst situation. We have 843 dedicated hospitals exclusively for COVID treatment in the country. Till now, we have already tested 15,25,631 patients in our various laboratories in the country.”

Mentioning about the North East states, The Union Minister said, “I am happy to say that all the 8 states together just have together 194 cases. Sikkim and Nagaland continue to remain unaffected. Tripura had the new cases from the 3 camps. Our BSF people got affected in these camps. Tripura we have 118 cases, Assam we have 60 cases, Meghalaya we have just about 12 cases, Manipur 2 cases and Arunachal & Mizoram has 1 case each. Overall in Northeast, only 22 of the 119 districts are affected.” Infact, Tripura became the first state in North East to cross 100 plus COVID-19 positive cases.

Speaking about Assam, Dr. Harsh Vardhan said, “Here we have 14 out of 33 districts affected by covid. It all started with the Tabligi Jamaat which was all over the country.” The Union Minister also made reference to the bus which came from Ajmer as one of the reasons for the spike in the number of Covid cases in Assam. At present, the bus travellers from Ajmer has increased the number of cases in Assam and in Tripura the cases are rising due to infection in BSF camps.” The Minister expressed happiness at the good performance of North East states and urged upon them to continue their good work.
