Supreme Court reiterates July 31 deadline for publication of final NRC

March 14: While dwelling on the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) deployed in Assam for NRC related work, a bench of the Supreme Court comprising of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice R F Nariman reiterated that it will not extend the July 31st, 2019 deadline for publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. The benchalso observed that the NRC work and Lok Sabha polls should go simultaneously in the state.

The apex court approved the prayer of State NRC coordinator Ranjan Gogoi to employ additional manpower including data operators, information technology personnel, and other technical pieces of equipment to set up quality check units at different places in the process of examining the claims. The bench was informed by the Centre that 167 companies of CAPF deployed in Assam will not be diverted for poll duty.
