Supply of fuel, essential items resume in Mizoram

way2barak, 23 Sept : The supply of fuel and other essential commodities has resumed in Mizoram after the truck and oil tankers associations called off their strike.

Supply of fuel and essential commodities were disrupted in the hill state after the oil tankers associations ceased operations due to the dilapidated condition of stretches – particularly Kawnpui to Khamprang in Kolasib district – of National Highway-306 and National Highway-6.

The highways are the prime lifelines of Mizoram as they connect the state with Assam and rest of the country.

Majority of the supplies to the state comes through these highways.

Mizoram Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister B Lalchhanzova stated that the trucks and oil tankers resumed operations and are now carrying fuel and essential supplies from other states.

The state had been facing acute shortage of fuel and essential commodities over the past one week as hundreds of trucks and oil tankers got stranded on the national highways after movement of loaded trucks and oil tankers became difficult due the poor road condition.

The Mizoram Oil Tanker Drivers’ Association (MOTDA) and Petroleum Entrepreneurs’ and Transporters’ Union of Mizoram (PETUM) seized operations citing risk to the drivers and local populace fearing spillage of oil due to bumpy roads.

However, both the associations decided to resume operations after inspecting the ongoing repair works on these highways.

The Mizoram government has been constantly monitoring the ongoing repair works and engaged private firms for expeditious completion of the works.
