Students from Cachar stuck in war-hit Ukraine; dist administration takes initiative for evacuation

Mar. 1: Many Indian students have been stuck in the war-torn regions of Ukraine after the Russian forces launched an all-out attack. Indian government is trying to evacuate its citizens exploring alternative routes after Ukraine had shut down its airspace. Meanwhile, it came to surface that one Muhim Ahamed Khan from Cachar along with two more students from the district were stuck in war-hit Ukraine and were battling for life by taking shelter in the bunker for past few days.

Immediately, the district administration of Cachar set to action and took initiative for safe evacuation of Muhim and 2 other students from Ukraine. In this connection, Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli contacted Muhim Ahmed Khan over phone and ensured that he is registered in the Portal of Assam Government helpdesk.

As per directives received from Cachar DC on Tuesday, Circle officer of Katigorah, Kaberi Rongpipi visited the residence of Muhim Ahamed Khan at Katigorah, met his parents and had an hour long discussion on the strategies which are being taken by the Assam Government for safe evacuation of Muhim Ahamed Khan and other students from Cachar district.

While sharing her reaction, Circle Officer Katigorah, Kaberi Rongpipi said, “I have met their parents and has assured that their son will be provided all the necessary help and support for evacuation and get him back to India. DC Cachar has personally talked over with the parents and took stock of the present situation of the area where their son is stranded. We also reviewed regarding his health, finance and other problems faced by him”.

The Circle Officeer further informed, “DC Cachar has asked his parents to write a petition mentioning the details of Muhim Ahmed Khan, like passport, visa, etc.so that the same could be shared with the higher authorities for his help and speedy evacuation.”  It may be mentioned that Muhim Ahamed Khan, a 4th year student, is pursuing MBBS degree from Sumy State University, Ukraine. Sumy is a city in north-eastern Ukraine, and the capital of Sumy Oblast.

Meanwhile, at least 10 students from Assam were among the first batch of Indian nationals evacuated from war-torn Ukraine as they landed at Mumbai and New Delhi on separate flights since late Saturday night. India had on Saturday begun the evacuation of its stranded citizens amid the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, with the first evacuation flight bringing back 219 people from Bucharest to Mumbai in the evening.

The Ukrainian airspace has been closed for civil aircraft operations since February 24 morning when the Russian military offensive began. The Indian evacuation flights are operating out of Bucharest and Budapest. The Assam government has initiated the process for collecting details of people from the state stranded in Ukraine and also urged people to fill up the details so that the state government can have a centralised database for further action as required.

As reported, more than 100 students hailing from Assam are presently stranded in different parts of Ukraine. Beside Muhim Ahmed Khan, two other students of Cachar district, including one from Silchar are stuck in Sumy, which is in the north-eastern part of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Assam Government is trying to take information via Goggle Form of its citizens who are stranded in Ukraine. The state govt in Google Form wrote, “Please fill up the form if you are in Ukraine and would like assistance from Assam Government.” Here is the link of the Google Form.
