Teachers’ Day observed by Radhamadhab College without the presence of Teachers

৬ সেপ্টেম্বর : গোটা দেশ যখন ৫ সেপ্টেম্বর শিক্ষক দিবস পালনে ব্যস্ত, তখন রাধামাধব কলেজে ঘটে গেল এক অনাকাঙ্ক্ষিত ঘটনা। কলেজ ছাত্ররা শিক্ষক দিবস উপলক্ষে অডিটোরিয়ামে দিনভর অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করেছিল, কিন্তু সেখানে হাজির ছিলেন না একজন শিক্ষকও। এটি সত্যিই এক বিরল ঘটনা। জানা গেছে, রাধামাধব কলেজ টিচার্স কাউন্সিল গত ৩০ আগস্ট এক বৈঠকে সিদ্ধান্ত নেন যে, এ বছর শিক্ষক দিবসের অনুষ্ঠানে তাঁরা উপস্থিত থাকবেন না।

এ ব্যাপারে রাধামাধব কলেজ টিচার্স কাউন্সিলের সম্পাদক সুদর্শন গুপ্তকে জিগ্যেস করলে তিনি এ কথা স্বীকার করে বলেন যে, এক জরুরি বৈঠক ডেকে কাউন্সিল শিক্ষক দিবসের অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ না দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে। তবে এ বিষয়ে আর কিছু বলতে তিনি রাজি হননি। তবে একটি বিশেষ সূত্রে জানা গেছে, সাম্প্রতিক কালে কলেজের কিছু ছাত্রের অশোভন আচরণ শিক্ষকদের আত্মসম্মান ও ভাবমূর্তিতে আঘাত করেছে। আর সেজন্যই তাঁরা অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দেওয়া থেকে বিরত থাকেন।

গত কিছুদিন থেকে ছাত্রদের অশান্ত ও অমানবিক আচরণ সত্ত্বেও কলেজ কর্তৃপক্ষ তা মোকাবিলায় গড়িমসি করার জন্য পঠনপাঠনে এর প্রভাব পড়েছে। একসময় নিয়মানুবর্তিতার জন্য উপত্যকায় যে কলেজের নামডাক ছিল, সেই কলেজটি এখন এলাকার বাসিন্দাদের কাছেও মাথাব্যথার কারণ হয়ে উঠেছে। কয়েকদিন আগেও পড়ুয়াদের একটি অংশ কলেজের মূল গেট বন্ধ করে দিয়ে সবার আসা যাওয়ায় বাধা দান করেছিল। এ ব্যাপারে ওয়ে টু বরাকের প্রতিনিধির সঙ্গে কথা বলতে গিয়ে এলাকাবাসী অভিযোগ করেন, কিছু পড়ুয়ার অশোভন আচরণে তাঁরা বীতশ্রদ্ধ। আগে সবকিছু ভালোই ছিল। কিন্তু গত দু’বছর থেকে কিছু ছাত্রের চিৎকার চেঁচামেচিতে এলাকার শান্তি বিঘ্নিত হচ্ছে।

এভাবে পড়ুয়াদের অবৈধ ও অগণতান্ত্রিক পদ্ধতিতে প্রতিবাদ কর্মসূচি কলেজের শিক্ষক ও অশিক্ষক কর্মচারীরাও মেনে নেননি। কলেজ অধ্যক্ষ প্রণয় রঞ্জন দেব বলেন, এটা ঠিক যে ছাত্রদের আয়োজন করা শিক্ষক দিবসের অনুষ্ঠানে কলেজের শিক্ষকরা যাননি, কিন্তু বিশেষ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কারণেই শিক্ষকরা এমন সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে বাধ্য হয়েছেন। শিক্ষকরা মোটেই ছাত্রদের শত্রু নন। কিন্তু একাংশ ছাত্র যখন অবৈধভাবে দাবি উত্থাপন করে, তখন সেই দাবিতে আমল না দেওয়াটাও খুব স্বাভাবিক ব্যাপার। তিনি আরও বলেন, ছাত্রদের একাংশ অধ্যক্ষের কাছে দাবি জানায় যে, কলেজের বাণিজ্য বিভাগের সরকারিকরণের যাবতীয় গোপনীয় নথিপত্র তাদের হাতে তুলে দিতে। বর্তমানে এটি ভেনচার পর্যায়ে রয়েছে। একটি সূত্রে জানা গেছে, ছাত্রদের একাংশ এও দাবি করে যে, কলেজের শিক্ষকদের পরিবর্তে উচ্চমাধ্যমিক প্রথম বর্ষের ক্লাসে তাদের মনোনীত কিছু ছাত্র পাঠদান করবে। এমনকি এজন্য পঞ্চম সেমিস্টারের কয়েকজন ছাত্রের নামও তারা অধ্যক্ষকে সুপারিশ করেছে। অধ্যক্ষ ড. দেব এ ব্যাপারে বলেন, এই সমস্ত দাবি পুরোপুরি অসঙ্গত ও অযৌক্তিক এবং তা সরাসরি শিক্ষকদের অপমান করার শামিল।

এ দিকে, টিচার্স কাউন্সিলের পরামর্শে অধ্যক্ষ কলেজ চত্বরে দীর্ঘদিন ধরে অশান্তির পরিবাশ সৃষ্টিকারী ছাত্রদের অভিভাবকদের আসার অনুরোধ জানিয়ে ছিলেন। অধ্যক্ষের পক্ষ থেকে এ সংক্রান্ত চিঠি পাঠানো হলেও ছাত্ররা তাদের অভিভাবককে কলেজে নিয়ে আসতে রাজি হয়নি।

এ ব্যাপারে কলেজের পরিচালন সমিতির সভাপতি অধ্যাপক এন বি দে বলেন, তাঁকেও শিক্ষক দিবসের অনুষ্ঠানে কলেজে আসার আমন্ত্রণ জানানো হয়েছিল। ছাত্রদের অবৈধ দাবির কথা উল্লেখ করে অধ্যাপক দে বলেন, অধ্যক্ষ এ ব্যাপারে তাঁকে অবহিত করেছেন। তবে তিনি এও বলেন, শিক্ষক দিবসের অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ না দেওয়ার বিষয়ে কাউন্সিলের বৈঠকে যে সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে, সে ব্যাপারে অধ্যক্ষ তাঁকে কিছু বলেননি। তবে সবথেকে বিষ্ময়কর ঘটনা হল, যখন কলেজের সব স্থায়ী ও অস্থায়ী শিক্ষকরা অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দেওয়া থেকে বিরত থাকলেন, তখনও ছাত্ররা কলেজ অডিটোরিয়ামে অনুষ্ঠান চালিয়ে গিয়েছে। এতে একটা বিষয় স্পষ্ট যে, শিক্ষক দিবসের অনুষ্ঠানে শিক্ষকরা অনুপস্থিত থাকলেও ছাত্ররা কোনও পরোয়া করেনি।স্থানীয় বাসিন্দারা মনে করছেন, কলেজ পরিচালন সমিতি খুব শীঘ্রই এ ব্যাপারে ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করবে। আর এভাবে রাধামাধব কলেজের সাম্প্রতিক অবস্থার সুরাহা হবে।

September 6: On September 5, when the entire nation was celebrating Teachers’ Day, an unusual incident occurred at Radhamadhab College, Silchar (RMC). The students organized a day long programme but not a single teacher of the college was seen in the college auditorium where the function was going on. This was indeed an unusual and a rare sight.  On enquiry, it came to the surface that the Teachers’ Council (TC) of Radhamadhab College in its meeting held on 30 August adopted the resolution of abstaining from attending the Teachers’ Day celebration.

On being asked, Sudarshan Gupta, Secretary, Teachers’ Council of RMC accepted the fact that the TC in an emergent meeting has decided to abstain from attending the Teachers’ Day programme, but denied to comment any further on this issue. However, sources revealed that the continuous unruly behavior of a section of the students in the recent past has hurt the sentiment, self-esteem and dignity of the teachers. This in turn compelled them to decide against attending any programme conducted by the students on Teachers’ Day.

Continuous student unrest and lethargic attitude of the administration in tackling such activities has directly hampered the academic atmosphere of this college. Once famous as a disciplined institution of this valley, it has now become a major cause of concern even for the locality where it is situated. On enquiry, our correspondent came to know that a section of the students often lock the main gate and thereby prohibit the entry and exit of all. On any pretext, the students become unruly and lock the gates. Meanwhile, when contacted by way2barak, local residents said that they were fed up by the unruly behavior of the college students. The situation was quite tranquil earlier. But in the last two years, the screaming and shouting by a group of students has snatched away their peace. This illegal and undemocratic measure of protest did not go down well with the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college as well.

Speaking to our correspondent, Dr. P.R. Deb, Principal of the college said, “It is true that the teachers did not attend the programme conducted by the students on Teachers’ Day. But there were genuine reasons for the teachers to do so. Teachers are not the enemies of the students. But when a section of students keep on raising illegal demands detrimental to the interest of the institution they serve, it is but quite natural to resist such illegitimate claims.” Dr. Deb also told that a group of students wanted the Principal to give them all official and confidential papers regarding the development made towards provincialisation of the Commerce stream, which is at present in venture stage.”

It was further learnt that a section of the students demanded that instead of the teachers of the college, the H.S. 1st year classes should be taken by some students nominated by them and they also informed the Principal the names of the students of 5th Semester who would take classes in lieu of the teachers. Dr. Deb, the Principal of RMC said that all these and many other such demands were unreasonable and unjustified and were a direct insult to the teachers.

The Principal on the suggestion of the TC, called on the guardian of the students who since a long time has been responsible for creating disturbance in the college campus. Though letters were served by the Principal in this regard, but the erring students refrained from bringing their guardians and thus the decision of the Principal and the TC was blatantly violated.

When contacted, Prof. N.B. Dey, President of the Governing Body told way2barak that even he was invited by the students to attend the function organized by them on Teachers’ Day. As regards the illegitimate demands raised by the students, Prof. Dey said that the Principal of the college has informed him about them. But at the same time he told that the Principal has not informed him about the resolution adopted by the teachers regarding abstaining from attending the Teachers’ Day celebration.

However, the most surprising matter in this entire episode is that when all the teachers (permanent & contractual) abstained from attending the Teachers’ Day celebration, the students went on with their day long ‘Teachers’ Day’ programme in the college auditorium. This directly reveals the damn care attitude of the section of students, for whom the existence of teachers has got no value. Their main attitude seems to be merry-making even at the cost of insulting and ignoring the very existence of the teachers. If this be the attitude of the students on Teachers’ Day, it could very well be guessed that how they will behave on other working days. Local residents feel that the Governing Body of the college must immediately step in and adopt stern measures against the erring students and end the situation of lawlessness prevailing in Radhamadhab College.
