State facing twin challenges from pandemic and earthquakes: CM Mizoram
August 16: During the occasion of 74th Independence Day, Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga after unfurling the National Flag in Aizawl said, “The state is facing twin challenges- the pandemic and earthquakes.” He said that the state has confronted more challenges due to a series of earthquakes in several parts of the state amidst Covid-19 spread. More than 283 houses were damaged causing monetary loss to the tune of Rs 316.35 lakh due to the series of earthquakes that rocked the state since June 21.
Speaking on the alertness of his government, Zoramthanga said that active measures to tackle the virus was taken up by forming a state level task force on Covid-19 on the same day the WHO declared the outbreak “pandemic.” He further said that Mizoram was among the first states to announce a partial lockdown before the nationwide total lockdown.
On 15 August, Mizoram registered 64 fresh cases of COVID-19 taking the total to 777. At present there are 421 active cases in the State. A total of 356 patients have been completely cured of the the virus and discharged from hospitals. The State has not reported any COVID-19 related deaths so far.
