‘Special Corona Fee’: Delhi to charge extra 70% tax on MRP on liquor from 5 May
May 4: A ‘Special Corona Fees’ of 70% tax on Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of the liquor was imposed by the Delhi government. The revised prices will come into effect from Tuesday across national capital. The 70% tax is on the maximum retail price or MRP per bottle. For instance, a liquor bottle with a pre-tax MRP of Rs 1,000 will now cost Rs 1,700.
The announcement came after some liquor shops opened in the national capital on Monday after a 40-day nationwide lockdown to combat novel coronavirus outbreak and were closed after they were found flouting social distancing norms. The move to charge the 70 per cent tax on liquor was first considered at a cabinet meeting chaired by Mr Kejriwal on Monday morning itself, just after the extended lockdown kicked in with some rules eased. There are around 850 liquor shops in the city including those run by government agencies and private individuals.
