SMCH road to partially close for major infrastructure upgrade from May 20

way2barak, May 20: In a significant development aimed at boosting urban infrastructure, the half-width of SMCH Road in front of Silchar Polytechnic will remain closed to all vehicular traffic from May 20, 2025, until further notice. The closure marks the commencement of the first phase of a vital road upgradation project under the prestigious Mukhya Mantrir Unnoto Pakipath Nirman Aachani (MMUPPNA), financed through NABARD’s RIDF-XXX scheme for the financial year 2024–25.
The ongoing project includes the comprehensive improvement of the road stretch from Rangirkhari Netaji Statue point to SMCH Point, Silchar. The development package will not only enhance road quality but also incorporate the construction of a box culvert and RCC covered drainage system to ensure better connectivity, safety, and water management for commuters and residents alike.
While the temporary closure is expected to cause some inconvenience, the administration has appealed to the public for cooperation and patience. Authorities have expressed regret for the disruption, reassuring that the long-term benefits of the upgraded infrastructure will outweigh the short-term discomfort.
Issued by Assistant Executive Engineer S.U. Barbhuiya of the PWRD, Silchar Territorial Road Sub-Division, the notification emphasizes the importance of the project in transforming Silchar’s road network into a more modern and efficient system.
This is stated in a press release issued from Regional office of Information & Public Relations Barak valley Zone Silchar Assam.
