Sluice gates opened, pumps set to task; Itkhola- Malugram, Ghaniwala relieved of flood water

May 21: Since the last few days, the entire Itkhola- Malugram and Ghaniwala areas were submerged. After torrential rainfall, River Barak crossed the danger level and gradually water entered in many localities of Silchar town. As a safety measure, electricity was snapped in the areas where flood water accumulated. Even due to water pressure delivery pipes at Sadar Ghat plant was damaged. As a result, water could not be supplied. Devoid of water and electricity, the people of Itkhola- Malugram, Ghaniwala areas were passing the days in distress amidst a pool of water.

However, on Saturday, former Ward Commissioner, Bijendra Prasad Singh took the initiative and as the water level in Barak decreased, the Sluice gates of Manipuri Para and Itkhola were opened. At the initiative of MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, three pump sets were brought. Another pump was managed from a tea garden. Using these pump sets, the accumulated water at Itkhola- Malugram and Ghaniwala was thrown out. Gradually, the water level there started to come down. It is hoped that those areas where water still persists will bet receded by Sunday.

Bijendra Prasad Singh said, “Today the employees of the power department have done a lot of work all day long. Due to their relentless efforts, electricity services are being provided in many areas. At the same time, the workers of different organizations are standing by the side of the flood victims. Dipayan Chakraborty, MLA of Silchar, Water Resources Department, Silchar Municipality, APDCL, the people of the area, with the collective efforts of all, the life at Itkhola- Malugram- Ghaniwala is gradually becoming normal.”
