Sivasagar killing: Traders shut shops & markets as protest on Friday

November 23: As a mark of protest against the merciless killing of two Hindi speaking people last evening, shops and business establishments at Demow in Sivasagar district of Eastern Assam were closed on Friday. Anger and fear seemed to have gripped the people over there. Lack of insecurity appeared to be the main concern of the people at Demow.

One person believed to be a customer, identified as one Anup Gupta (40), a father of three and a owner of a bicycle shop at Dehingmukh area, was killed on the spot while the owner of the shop Kamal Agarwal succumbed to his injuries in the hospital later in the evening of the incident. Sources revealed that Manglu Agarwal, the younger brother of the deceased Kamal Agarwal tipped off the police in nabbing two ULFA(I) linkman near Demow petrol pump two months ago. The duo came to collect extortion money from Manglu Agarwalla. It needs mention that suspected ULFA(I) militants fired indiscriminately at kamal Agarwal’s shop around ten years ago. Police protection was also given  to Kamal Agarwal.
The killing of Kamal Agarwal is linked my many as the effect of the fall out between his brother Kamal Agarwal and ULFA(I). Pallav Bhattacharjee, in-charge of Special branch of Assam Police said that as per available information, the persons involved has sneaked into Nagaland after the crime. As per another source, a four member ULFA-I team has sneaked into Sivasagar district through Charaideo district. It is suspected that the group has executed Thursday’s blast at Demow.
Meanwhile, another bomb blast rocked Golakganj in Dhubri last night. As per reports, the blast occurred near Rakhalpath along the National Highway 31. A second bomb was also recovered at the same site but it was defused. No casualty has been reported. In the backdrop of the Demow blast, the Assam government on Friday effected a major reshuffle in the Assam Police.
