Sit-in-demonstration by lawyers in demand for resumption of physical functioning of courts
August 13: An hour long sit-in-demonstration by the lawyers was held on Thursday in front of the Silchar court premises to press the demand for resumption of physical functioning in the courts and reopening of the Bar as per decision of the Bar council of Assam. The demonstration was held from 11.30 AM to 12.30 PM.
In fact, the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh & Sikkim on 10 August notified that, “Keeping in view of the plights of lawyers due to non resumption of physical courts and because of closure of Bar Libraries of the sub-ordinate courts the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim held an urgent meeting under the Presidentship of Mr. Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury the Chairman of the Council, decided to hold a Sit-In-Demonstration for 1 hour on 13.08.2020 at 11:30 am in front of all the court premises by maintaining physical distancing and other protocol under Covid-19 demanding resumption of physical courts and opening of office of the bar associations.”
The sit-in-demonstration at Silchar saw the presence of almost all the practicing advocates in the court premises. All lawyers assembled by maintaining physical distancing and wearing face masks. It needs mention here that after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the functioning of regular courts came to a halt by a notification issued by the Gauhati High Court.
