Silchar Station is approved under Amrit Bharat Scheme for redevelopment: Ashwini

way2barak, March 20: Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology while replying to a question on development/upgradation of Silchar station, informed the Lok Sabha that Silchar station is among the 50 stations in the Assam approved for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme. The redevelopment aims to transform Silchar station into a world-class facility, enhancing passenger amenities and operational efficiency. Specific improvements include modernized infrastructure, upgraded platforms, improved waiting areas and enhanced accessibility features. This initiative is part of a broader effort to boost connectivity and promote economic growth in the region.
While replying to another part of the question, Railway Minister informed that, for the convenience of passengers, Silchar Railway Station currently offers three double-bedded retiring rooms and one six-bedded dormitory. Additionally, several improvements have been made in recent years, including enhanced platform surfacing, upgraded waiting halls, installation of new platform shelters and improved circulating areas and approach roads, provision of lifts, etc.
As part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Silchar Railway Station has been selected for a long term phased development approach. The key enhancements under this scheme include better station access, upgraded waiting halls, toilets and the installation of free Wi-Fi. The scheme also envisions improved passenger information systems, kiosks for local products, eco-friendly landscaping, executive lounges and designated business meeting spaces. Furthermore, efforts are being made to enhance multi-modal integration for seamless transportation.
In addition to passenger amenities, the railway administration is also addressing the accommodation needs of its employees. At present 243 railway quarters are available at Silchar Railway Station all of which are occupied by railway staff. To meet the growing demand, the Railway has planned the construction of 100 additional staff quarters. In the first phase, construction work for 22 new quarters has already commenced.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Railways is considering the conversion of Silchar’s local passenger trains into Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) services. However, this transition depends on operational feasibility, the availability of DEMU rakes and other competing railway requirements. Currently Silchar operates 30 train services.
The funding for these development projects has been made with a budget allocation of Rs. 547 crore for Northeast Frontier Railway in the financial year 2024-25. This investment highlights the government’s commitment to upgrading railway infrastructure and ensuring better facilities for passengers and staff alike.
The comprehensive development of Silchar Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, along with the construction of new railway quarters and the potential introduction of DEMU services, reflects the government’s dedication to modernizing railway infrastructure. These efforts will significantly improve passenger convenience, enhance staff accommodation and contribute to the overall growth of railway services in the region.
