But is the project still at Silchar or taken to Jogighopa!
June 30: The government has approved a plan to build 34 mega Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLP) at an investment of Rs 2 lakh crore. The projects, for which land is already available with state governments, will be taken up through public-private-partnerships (PPP Model). Out of the 34 places earmarked for building the MMLPs, Silchar in Assam has also been selected.
Sharing this information, BJP MP from Silchar Constituency, Dr. Rajdeep Roy in a tweet thanked Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari for shortlisting Silchar as an MMLP hub to boost logistic sector in North East. Silchar MP tweeted, “Thanks @nitin_gadkari ji for short listing Silchar as a MMLP hub to boost logistics sector in NE. I welcome the @ADB_INRM team due to arrive for site inspection soon. #silcharmilestones @sarbanandsonwal @himantabiswa @cmpatowary #towardsworldclassligisticssector.”

Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) are a key policy initiative of the Government of India to improve the country’s logistics sector by lowering overall freight costs, reducing vehicular pollution and congestion, and cutting warehousing costs. The government’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is developing multi-modal logistics parks at selected locations in the country under its Logistics Efficiency Enhancement Program (LEEP).
“Logistics parks will act as freight aggregation and distribution hubs and will enable long haul freight movement between hubs on larger sized trucks, rail and waterways. It will reduce freight transportation costs. We are now coming out with a logistics policy that aims at increasing the movement of freight transportation on the highways network and to reduce logistics cost by almost half,” said Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Speaking to way2barak, Silchar MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy said, “Yes, this is indeed a great news for Barak Valley as a whole. This again proves the fact that our government is promise bound to work for the overall development of Barak Valley. For building MMLP hub, the basic criteria is 200 bhiga of land. I have already taken up the matter with Keerthi Jalli, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar.”
Dr. Roy further said that he has asked the Deputy Commissioner to identify the land required for the MMLP in the district on a war footing. It will indeed be a welcome move for the skilled work force of our valley. Thousands of job will be generated once the MMLP comes up at Silchar. He said, “The pandemic has witnessed a huge skilled work force coming back to the 3 districts of the valley. Now, once this state-of-the art project comes up, these young and skilled work force need not go back again to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore or Gujarat. Their own town Silchar will be capable to absorb them in multifarious tasks in the MMLP. It is a huge news for us. It is indeed a God-sent opportunity for us.”
Though Silchar MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy was highly elated by this news, yet unconfirmed sources revealed that efforts are on by the state government to transfer this Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) from Silchar to Jogighopa. Only time could say, whether Silchar will be fortunate enough to get transformed by the setting up of this MMLP hub or Guwahati would snatch the bite from the valley’s mouth.
