Shillong couple choose the day of Netaji Jayanti to protest against atrocities on non-tribals
Jan. 23: The epitome of valour and patriotism, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose gave unbridled strength to India’s Freedom Movement and is a huge inspiration for all till today. It’s on the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji that a couple in Shillong, Meghalaya sat in protest against violent attack on innocent minorities of Meghalaya in Lumdiengjri area on 20 January, 2022. With numerous placards, the Choudhury couple in Shillong raised voice against atrocities on minorities in Meghalaya.
Extending support to the bravery exhibited by the couple, Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy said, “I express solidarity with Shillong‘s Choudhury couple,on hunger strike on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti, to protest atrocities on non-tribals in Meghalaya since 1979.” Dr Roy further stated, “I urge upon Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to punish the guilty as Meghalaya Police has indeed been silent spectator since 1979.”

Earlier, a group of unidentified miscreants numbering around eight, assaulted and injured several persons at Lumdiengjri area Shillong on Thursday. Three of the injured were brought to civil hospital Shillong. The three injured are Chandan Paul (55), Nurjul Mullah (30) and Abdul S Chaudhary (38). Calling on the State government to take stringent action, the families of the injured said that this sort of repeated attacks by unidentified miscreants against the minorities in the State who are permanent residents, has to be stopped. The couple who sat in protest movement in Shillong on Sunday also stated that this is not something new, but atrocities on non-tribals in Meghalaya is a regular affair since several decades.
