Researchers find deadlier hidden gene in COVID-19 virus, study underway

Nov. 11: In a recent study, researchers have uncovered a mysterious gene in the genetic code of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 – a segment virtually hidden from view in the virus’s genome, and largely overlooked until now. This hidden gene which which helps the virus replicate faster within host cells could be the reason behind its deadly pandemic potential.

In the current study, published in the journal eLife, the researchers described overlapping genes — or “genes within genes” — in the virus which they believe play a role in the replication of the virus within host cells. “Knowing that overlapping genes exist and how they function may reveal new avenues for coronavirus control, for example through antiviral drugs,” said study lead author Chase Nelson from the American Museum of Natural History.

One thing’s for sure. In a virus that only has about 15 known genes, the discovery of another one – let alone an overlapping gene – is a significant development. Scientists are of the view that knowing more about the 15 genes that make up the coronavirus could significantly help in developing drugs to combat Covid-19 in the future.
