Remdesivir to be provided free of cost to BPL Covid patients in Assam
For non-BPL Covid Patients the cost of Remdesivir will be borne by the patients/ attendants
April 17: There has been a resurgence in COVID-19 cases in the country as a whole. Further, there has been recently an increase of COVID-19 cases in Assam. It is in this backdrop that the Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Assam has taken steps to provide the best possible treatment to COVID-19 patients.
It needs mention here that Remdesivir has an important role in the COVID-19 treatment protocol. Samir K Sinha, Principal Secretary to the Govt of Assam, Health & Family Welfare Department on 17 April, 2021 in a notification stated that, there is presently adequate stock of Remdesivir in various hospitals under the Health & Family Welfare Department and steps are being taken to augment the existing stock.

Now, in order to ensure optimal utilization of financial resources in hospitals under the Health & Family Welfare Department, the Assam government has decided that:
- In case of treatment of BPL patients, Remdesivir will be provided free of cost.
- In case of treatment of non-BPL patients, cost of Remdesivir will have to borne by patients/ attendants at the rate equal to rate of procurement of Remdesivir by National Health Mission, Assam.
- All hospitals will maintain separate accounts/ ledger for the amount collected against payments made for Remdesivir. This amount will be deposited in the account of Hospital Management Society and no expenditure shall be made out of the fund thus collected, without prior permission/ instruction from Government. This order comes into force with immediate effect.
