Recent devastating flood in Silchar is not man-made but administration-made: APCC President Bhupen Borah
July 8: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma during his recent visit to Silchar said that the devastating flood which submerged Silchar was man-made as some miscreants had intentionally broken the dyke at Bethukandi through which water rushed inside the town and flooded it. Reacting to it, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President, Bhupen Borah said, “This is not at all a man-made disaster, rather it is an administration-made disaster which resulted in the devastating flood in Silchar.”
APCC chief Bhupen Borah came to Silchar on Thursday to take stock of the flood situation. From Airport, he directly reached Bethukandi. He was accompanied by District Congress President Tamal Kanti Banik, MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, MLA Misbaul Islam Laskar, General Secretary of APCC among others.
Elaborating his stand, Bhupen Borah said, “The flood in Silchar was an outcome of lack of farsightedness of the district administration, the MLA, MP, and the local minister. He said, “All of them failed to deliver what they were supposed to do. During the regime of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, a project was taken in hand to set up a sluice gate at Bethukandi. However, with the change of government. this project was also abandoned. What surprises me is that the government may change, but those who assume power should not stop the developmental works initiated by the erstwhile government. Had this project been completed, then today Silchar would have been safe.”
“I will also raise this issue in Assam Legislative Assembly. The people here in Silchar has suffered tremendous financial loss. Just by giving the flood victims 2 kg rice and 200 gm dal is not enough. The tragedy occured due to the fault of the administration and the government. The devastating flood in Silchar is a result of nexus between the administration and contractors. The Chief Minister just cannot evade this issue by terming the incident as ‘man-made’, asserted the Congress Chief.
He also assured to have a threadbare discussion into this issue with the MLA’s, former ministers and other functionaries of the party and then demand a high level enquiry into the matter. “I will also write to the Speaker to do an investigation by forming a House Committee, so that the truth may come out. This is not at all a small matter. The economic loss suffered by the people will not be eased just by the visit of the Chief Minister in an helicopter or going through boat for half-an-hour. An economic package needs to be announced by the government as because this disaster was not at all man-made, but rather due to the unholy nexus between the administration and contractors,” added APCC chief Bhupen Borah.
