Ray of hope: India’s daily Covid-19 cases dropped to 2.4 lakh
May 23: In what seems to be some relief is that India’s new Cobid-19 cases have dropped to 2,40,842 in the last 2 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry. This took the the cumulative caseload to 2,65,30,132. This is the least number of cases that the country has seen since 16 April and the seventh day when less than three lakh cases have been reported.
The country reported 3,741 more deaths in the last 24 hours, after reporting over 4,000 deaths for two consecutive days. With this, the cumulative death toll in the country has reached 2,99,266.
Also, the recoveries surpassed the fresh cases in the country for the tenth straight day as 3,55,102 more people have been discharged. The number of total discharges now stands at 2,34,25,467. At present, there are 28,05,399 active cases of Covid-19 in India.
The government on Saturday evening said that the country has been witnessing a drop in positivity rate for the last two weeks. 18 states presently have a positivity rate of more than 15 per cent. Fourteen states have a positivity rate between 5-15 per cent; four states have a positivity rate less than 5 per cent.
The country has so far administered 19,50,04,184 anti-Covid jabs. Out of these, 16,04,542 shots were given in the last 24 hours. The central government has announced that family members and dependents of workers can also be covered under the Covid-19 vaccination drive at industrial and workplace inoculation centres.
