Rare but true: Cachar police finds lost mobile after 3 months & return it to its owner

Jan. 19: Starting from the silver screen to television soaps, everywhere police is depicted as a negative element in the society. Whenever any mobile or any vehicle gets lost or stolen, the victim files a police complaint and here ends all hopes of getting back the lost or stolen item. However, in a rarest incident, Cachar Police found out a mobile of a youth which was lost almost 3 months back and returned it back to its owner.

The incident happened in Silchar two months ago. A youth, Debopom Purkayastha lost his new smart phone given by his parents. Debopom, a resident of Link Road, Silchar went to a shop in his neighbourhood to buy some household items on the day of Bijoya Dashami on 26 October, 2020. When he returned back home, Debopom suddenly noticed that his mobile phone was missing from his pocket. he then realised that the mobile which he kept in the pocket of his pant had fallen somewhere. At once, he went back and searched for it, but it vain. His parents then lodged an FIR at Rangirkhari Police Outpost.

His parents, cultural activist, Sabyasachi Purkayastha and teacher Shipra Purkayastha also had no hopes of getting back the lost mobile of their son. Since then, almost three months have elapsed. Suddenly, Debopom Purkayastha got a call from the local police station. Police informed him that his lost phone was recovered and asked him to come to Rangirkhari Police Outpost and take it back. It was indeed the greatest surprise of his life.

Speaking to way2barak, Debopom’s mother, Shipra Purkayastha, retired teacher of Adharchand HS School said, “It is really a very surprising but happy news for us. We were informed that a rickshaw-puller was purchased the mobile from a auto-rickshaw driver for Rs.2,500. The moment, the rickshaw-puller inserted a new SIM, a message was sent to the original SIM by the service provider. This clue was enough for the police to track it.”

When contacted by way2barak, Pranand Deka in-charge of Rangirkhari Police Outpost said, “We had already put the handset under surveillance. The moment a new SIM was inserted into the handset, we got the message. It was then that we contacted the person in the guise of a courier agency and finally successfully traced the new user and recovered the phone. We have handed over the handset to its original user.”
