Ramanuj Students Explored Kolkata’s Wildlife and Marine Life on Educational Tour

Way2barak, May 16 : Twenty students guided by the faculty members of the Department of Zoology, Ramanuj Gupta Degree College, Silchar, recently embarked on a 7-day educational tour to Kolkata, which took place from May 4th to May 11th, 2023. The tour provided a unique opportunity for the group to enhance their understanding of zoology through various visits and hands-on experiences. The group was guided by Miss Parsha Tanvir Mazumder, Head of the department, and Assistant Professor, Yahyea Baktiar Laskar and Debasish Bhattacharjee.

On the first day of the tour, the group visited the renowned Alipore Zoological Garden, where they had the chance to observe a diverse range of animal species up close. The students were fascinated by the rich biodiversity and gained valuable insights into the behavior and habitats of different animals. Later that day, they visited the Indian Museum, where they explored exhibits related to Zoology and gained a deeper understanding of India’s natural
history.

Day two of the tour offered a unique experience as the students visited the marine fish market at Digha, West Bengal. They had the opportunity to witness the bustling trade of marine fish and learn about the diversity of marine life found in the region. To further enhance their understanding, the students ventured to the nearby sea beach at Tajpur to collect crustacean shells and other marine organisms, engaging in hands-on exploration of coastal biodiversity.

On the third day, the group visited the ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute at Barrackpore, Kolkata, where they were greeted by renowned scientist Pronob Gogoi. Mr. Gogoi guided the students through various research activities conducted at the institute, shedding light on the significant contributions of fisheries research to the field of Zoology. The students had the chance to witness first-hand the institute’s efforts in fish breeding, aquaculture techniques, and sustainable fishing practices.

Throughout the tour, the students actively engaged in discussions with their teachers, local experts, and scientists, enriching their understanding of zoology beyond classroom teachings. The educational tour not only expanded their knowledge but also instilled a sense of appreciation for the importance of wildlife conservation and sustainable practices.

As the 7-day educational tour concluded on May 11th, the students returned to Silchar with a wealth of knowledge and unforgettable experiences. This journey served as a stepping stone for their
future endeavours in the field of Zoology and conservation, empowering them to make significant contributions in their chosen paths.
