March 22: Here are the major events that occurred on 22 March….

  • 22 March, 1457: Gutenberg Bible became the first printed book.
  • 22 March, 1739: When Nader Shah attacked Delhi in 1739, he defeated the Mughals in the battle of Karnal. After defeating the Mughal emperor, Mohammad Shah with his army marched to Delhi. Over the course of this expedition on 22nd March, Nader Shah’s army plundered the city and led to the death of so many people that Mohammad Shah had to beg for mercy. Although Nader Shah agreed, the Mughal emperor had to handover the keys of the royal treasury to stop the plunder. This was the time when India lost some of its most iconic jewels, including the Peacock Throne and Kohinoor.
  • 22 March, 1765: Stamp Act passed; 1st direct British tax on American colonists, organized by Prime Minister George Grenville. It was repealed on March 17, 1766.
  • 22 March, 1885: Birth anniversary of Indian archaeologist Ghulam Yazdani- he was instrumental in the conservation and restoration of some of the most iconic archaeological sites in India including the Ajanta Caves, Bidar Fort and Daulatabad. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan Award by Indian government in 1959 for his contribution.
  • 22 March, 1894: Birth anniversary of Indian Revolutionary Surya Sen who contributed immensely to the Indian freedom struggle. He is popularly well known for leading the Chittagong armoury raid which led to a very violent response from the British government. Although he managed to evade the police for more than 2 years, he was ultimately arrested, tortured and killed by the British government. Movies like ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’ and ‘Chittagong’ are based on his life.
  • 22 March, 1917: The USA is the first nation to recognize the new government of Russia.
  • 22 March, 1957: On this day, Indian government adopted the Saka Era calendar with Chaitra as its first month along with the Gregorian calendar for official purposes.
  • 22 March, 1977: Indira Gandhi resigns as Prime Minister of India.
  • 22 March, 1992: On this day,World Water Day is observed annually to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. It was recommended to celebrate in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janerio. And then, in 1993 the first World Water Day is celebrated.
  • 22 March, 1993: Intel introduces Pentium-processor (80586) 64 bits-60 MHz-100+ MIPS.
  • 22 March, 2002: A collection of letters and cards sent by Princess Diana of Wales sold for $33,000. The letters and cards were written to a former housekeeper at Diana’s teenage home.
  • 22 March, 2018: US President Donald Trump imposes $60 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese imports.
