• 19 March, 1702: James II’s daughter Anne Stuart becomes Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland following the death of William III.
• 19 March, 1812: The first Spanish constitution is enacted, one of the earliest constitutions ever promulgated.
• 19 March, 1911: 1st International Women’s Day sees over 1 million men and women attend rallies in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Issues discussed included women’s right to vote and to hold public office, the right to work, to vocational training and an end to discrimination on the job.
• 19 March, 1945: Adolf Hitler issues “Nero Decree” to destroy all German factories.
• 19 March, 1958: Britain’s first planetarium opens at Madame Tussaud’s, London.
• 19 March, 1972: The India–Bangladesh Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Peace was a 25 year treaty that was signed on on this day forging close bilateral relations between India and the newly established state of Bangladesh. The treaty was also known as the Indira–Mujib Treaty, after the signatories of the treaty the Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
• 19 March, 1982: Acharya J. B. Kripalani, writer, nationalist, parliamentarian, founder of Kissan Mazdoor Dal and president of Indian National Congress in 1946, passed away at the age of 94.
• 19 March, 1998: E.M.S. Namboodiripad, veteran communist leader of CPM and Kerala’s first Chief Minister, passed away in Thiruvananthapuram at the age of 88.
• 19 March, 1998: BJP-led coalition government is sworn in. Atal Behari Vajpayee became the Prime Minister of India for the second time. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was two time Prime Minister of India, first from 16 May to 1 June 1996, and then from 19 March 1998 to 22 May 2004.
• 19 March, 2000: Bill Clinton, US President, arrives to a warm welcome in India. This was the first presidential visit of a US head in two decades.
• 19 March, 2003: Airstrikes by an American and British-led coalition signal the beginning of the invasion of Iraq, without United Nations support and in defiance of world opinion.
