• 1 May, 1707: Acts of Union comes into force, uniting England and Scotland to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain
• 1 May, 1840: The world’s first adhesive postage stamp is issued in the United Kingdom. The Penny Black shows a portrait of Queen Victoria. Despite its historical significance, the stamp can be bought for around £25 as over 68 million copied were distributed.
• 1 May, 1867: Kasinadhuni Nageswara Rao Pantulu, great freedom fighter, journalist, nationalist, politician, pioneer in library movement and litterateur, was born at Elakurru village in Gudivada Taluk, District Krishna.
• 1 May, 1873: David Livingstone, Scottish missionary &  explorer died on this day.
• 1 May, 1789: Swami Vivekananda established Ramkrishna Mission.
• 1 May, 1886: May Day was first observed in Chicago, USA. Work, Social activities, Rest, for 8 Hours.

• 1 May, 1909: Madame Bhikaji Cama secretly left London and went to France where she wrote and spoke about the cruelty of Britishers.
• 1 May, 1913: Balraj Sahani, famous film actor, was born.
• 1 May, 1923: Under the leadership of Singaravelu Chettiar, the first May day was celebrated in India.
• 1 May, 1924: German automobile manufacturers Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie begin their first joint venture (later merge into Mercedes-Benz)
• 1 May, 1926: Jim Corbett killed the notorious man-eating leopard of Rudraprayag at Gulabrai village, who had attacked and killed about 125 people.

• 1 May, 1945: Adolf Hitler’s death is announced on German radio. As the Soviet flag is raised over the Reich Chancellery, the German people are informed that “our leader, Adolf Hitler, has fallen for Germany, fighting to his last breath against Bolshevism.”
• 1 May, 1947: Congress Working Committee accepts Partition in principle.
• 1 May, 1948: Baroda State merged into Bombay Province.
• 1 May, 1960: Old Bombay province was divided between Maharashtra and Gujarat States.

• 1 May, 1961: Fidel Castro declares Cuba a socialist nation and bans elections. A month after Cuban troops had fought off a U.S. backed military invasion at the Bay of Pigs, Castro announces that “The revolution has no time for elections.”
• 1 May, 1964: Ravishankar University was established at Raipur in Madhya Pradesh.
• 1 May, 1977: Janata Party was established.
• 1 May, 1978: Naomi Uemura becomes of the first person to reach the North Pole alone. The Japanese adventurer is also credited with the first solo ascent of Mount McKinley and the first solo rafting of the Amazon river. He disappeared in 1984 during a winter ascent of Mount McKinley.
• 1 May, 1983: Amravati University established.
• 1 May, 1994: Political party Shiromani Akali Dal was established. Six leading Akali factions dissolved to form a new party, the Shiromani Akali Dal-Amritsar, which wanted a ‘Sikh State’.
• 1 May, 1995: SAARC endorses South Asia Free Trade Area (SAFTA) and establishes a South Asian Development Fund (SADF) for the economic and technical development of the subcontinent.
