Election Commission issues show-cause notice to CM Himanta for violation of poll code

Oct. 26: Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a show-cause notice to Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for violating the model code of conduct during the campaigning for by-polls to 5 Assembly seats. He has been given time till 5 PM on Tuesday to respond to the notice. The ECI received two complaints along with video and news clippings from Debabrata Saikia and Bhupen Kumar Bora. They alleged that the Chief Minister made several announcements at various election meetings in Bhabanipur, Thowra and Mariani constituencies. It was alleged that that Dr Sarma violated the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by promising roads, bridges, medical colleges and other development projects while campaigning.
