Post-flood disease management is the top most priority, follow sanitation norms to prevent epidemic: DC Cachar

July 3: Post-flood disease management is the top most priority in Cachar district as there is a chance of outbreak of epidemic in the district. This was stated by the Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli, while addressing the officials at the conference hall of DRDA in Silchar on Sunday.

Elaborating on the steps being taken by the Cachar administration in collaboration with district health society to contain outbreak of epidemic in the district, Jalli said, “We have constituted teams in all the municipal wards and GP level with ground staff, teachers, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, Jeevikashaki and others who will aware the common people about the appropriate behaviour of maintaining cleanliness, hygiene and other health parameters. We have also prepared hospitals ready to tackle any serious condition in the community.”

Jalli also emphasized on the appropriate behaviour of maintaining health and hygiene by the people during post-flood situation. She said, “All people in the relief camps and at home should maintain cleanliness and proper hygiene, regularly wash hands with soap and while cooking, use clean water in addition to boil water at optimum level”

DC Jalli advised people to purify water using halogen tablets (one tablet in 20 lts of water). She further informed that water tankers are supplying water regularly in all the areas of Cachar district.
She laid stress on the proper garbage disposal system in Silchar and urged people to keep garbage at proper place so that it can be collected by SMB staff in the night.

Talking about prevention of disease, DC Jalli said, “Diarrhea is the most high-risk disease which can be prevented with precautions. At the time of diarrhea, patients should be given ample quantity water which will prevent from dehydration and will minimize severity. Rat bites are also increasing and have common symptoms of fever and dehydration. If any fever persists for more than 2 days, the patient should be referred to the nearest hospital for proper treatment.”

“In town area, 28 medical teams and in village 162 medical teams are deployed and will visit the relief camps and affected village of Cachar district. Specialist team of O&G, SKIN and Pediatrics will visit separately to high inmates relief camp and provide free medication. All the pregnant lady and under-5 children will get vaccination in camp,” Jalli quipped. She also directed the tea garden management to become more proactive and asked to make necessary arrangements for the drinking water and also to clean the tankers regularly as infection may spread if not cleaned properly.

In the meeting, DC Jalli asked the PHE department for testing the source of drinking water in SMCH laboratory. Earlier, at the event, DC Jalli felicitated the doctors from Gauhati Medical College with a token of appreciation. It needs mention that on the direction of CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, a team of 20 doctors were sent from GMCH for the treatment of flood affected people in Cachar.

Chief Executive Officer, Cachar Zilla Parishad and additional deputy commissioner, health, Eldad Faiherm, Joint Director Health, Dr Ashutosh Barman, Principal, Silchar Medical College & Hospital, Dr Babul Bezbaruah also spoke on the occasion.
