Popular talk on ‘Comet’ to be organized by Department of Physics, Assam University
July 23: A spectacular comet NEOWISE is currently dazzling in the evening sky. This comet gets attention not only to Astronomers but also to many spectators. Comet NEOWISE is visible since July 14 of this month and will be visible up to August 03, 2020. This comet will be spotted just after the sunset towards the Northwest sky near Ursa Major (‘Saptarshi Mandal’).
Comet NEOWISE (Officially known as C/2020 F3), was first discovered on March 17, 2020, by the infrared-optimized Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Space Explorer (NEOWISE) spacecraft. Since then, the comet has been spotted by several space telescopes and observatories, astronauts on the International Space Station and, of course, stargazers on Earth. This comet was closest to Earth on July 23, 2020, and is still visible.
The Department of Physics, Assam University, Silchar will be going to organize popular level talks and discussion honoring the apparition of Comet NEOWISE on 25th July 2020. The theme of the talk is “Comet: The spectacular visitor to the Solar System”.
This Science Popularization program is a part of the Silver Jubilee celebration of the department. University, College, and School students from different corners of the country may register their names in that event. For registration one may visit: http://www.aus.ac.in/physics-department/. The meeting will be organized through “Google Meet”. The names of speakers are Prof. Asoke Kumar Sen, Prof. Atri Deshamukhya, and Dr. Himadri Sekhar Das.
