Police asked to restrain use of lethal weapons while dealing with civilian population: CM Assam
Assam Cabinet express condolence at the death of 6 persons in police- civilian conflict at West Karbi Anglong
way2barak, Nov.23: In the weekly Assam Cabinet on November 23, several key decisions related to govt holidays for 2023, construction of new Anganwadi centres & a trumpet interchange in Gauripur, new handloom & tourism infrastructure, tree-felling outside forest areas, etc., among others were taken. The Cabinet Meeting held at Assam House, New Delhi was chaired by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Further, the Cabinet also expressed deep concern and condolences at the death of 6 persons and injuries caused to several others in an unfortunate police-civilian conflict situation in West Karbi Anglong. Stating this, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We decided to request Hon Justice Smt Rumi Phukan, Retd Judge of Gauhati HC, to conduct a judicial probe into facts & circumstances that led to the incident & conclude the enquiry within 60 days.”
“Our Cabinet also decided to hand over the related police investigation to CBI. We advised Police to restrain use of lethal weapons while dealing with civilian population. SOPs for Police as well as Forest personnel will be prepared to deal with such situation. All police station in charges will be properly sensitised on such matters,” added the Chief Minister.
