Police able to seize only 10% of available drugs, long way to go eradicate the menace: CM Assam

July 14: The menace of drugs has become a matter of grave concern in Assam. It is not that Assam is only used as a transit for drugs, but youths here too are entangled in the web of narcotics. Police is able to seize only 10 percent of the available drugs in Assam. But the actual quantity that is being transported or sold is many times more than what has been seized. Those who are arrested so far are just the peddlers. This was said by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma during his speech at Assam Assembly on Wednesday.

Since he took over as the Chief Minister of Assam, the Police has been relentlessly working to eradicate this menace. He said that his government has got totally zero tolerance towards drugs. 1,120 cases have been registered since his taking over as the CM. Since then,1,897 peddlers were arrested. A total of 27 kg heroine and 12,823 ganza, 41 kg opium & 78,000 bottles of cough syrup, 13 lakh psychotropic substances was seized during this phase, informed the Chief Minister. “Unfortunately, such anti-social elements also made entry into the police department, who were involved in such illegal incidents,” stated Dr Sarma.

The Chief Minister further stated that certain incidents of involvement of anti-socials in the police department is similar to what is showed in Hindi films. He further stated that the drugs which has been seized so far will be burnt. The CM also praised the police who are nabbing drugs and peddlers in the state. These drugs were consumed by the youths and have become a social menace. Many youths are stealing money from their parents to procure drugs. The drugs were also consumed by the militants, informed Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
