No term of apology in Milon’s letter, EC seeks legal opinion on it; deadlock unresolved

১৮ ফেব্রুয়ারি: মিলন দাসের চিঠি পেয়ে মঙ্গলবার জরুরি বৈঠকে বসে আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের এগজিকিউটিভ কাউন্সিল৷ কিন্তু যে চিঠি হাতে নিয়ে জরুরি বৈঠক ডাকলেন উপাচার্য দিলীপচন্দ্র নাথ, সেই চিঠি কি ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা, এ নিয়েই আড়াই ঘন্টা ব্যাপী বৈঠকে চর্চা হয়৷ মিলন দাস ইনিয়েবিনিয়ে বহু কথা বললেও কোথায় দুঃখপ্রকাশের লেশমাত্র নেই৷ বরং তার বিরুদ্ধে যে সব অভিযোগ এনে তাকে বহিষ্কার করা হয়েছে, ওই অভিযোগগুলি যথার্থ নয়, তা-ই নানাভাবে তুলে ধরা হয়েছে চিঠিতে৷

ফলে এগজিকিউটিভ কাউন্সিল একবাক্যে একে ক্ষমাপ্রার্থনা ধরে নিতে পারেনি৷ এর দরুন মিলন দাসের বহিষ্কারের নির্দেশও প্রত্যাহৃত হয়নি৷ তবে তার চিঠিটিকে একেবারে খারিজও করে দেওয়া হয়নি৷ সিদ্ধান্ত হয়েছে, চিঠিটি আইনি পরামর্শদাতাদের কাছে পাঠানো হবে৷ জবাব এলে ফের জরুরি বৈঠকে বসবে এগজিকিউটিভ কাউন্সিল৷ তখনই চূড়ান্ত সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হবে৷

তবে কি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় বন্ধই থাকবে? না, এগজিকিউটিভ কাউন্সিল এ দিন প্রতিবাদস্থল নির্ধারিত করে দেওয়া হয়েছে৷ যার যা আপত্তি, প্রতিবাদ, বিক্ষোভ নেতাজি মঞ্চ চত্বরেই করতে পারবে৷ এর বাইরে কোথাও আন্দোলন নিষিদ্ধ৷ বর্তমানে আন্দোহনরতদেরও তাদের বিক্ষোভ, অনশন যাই চলুক, তাকে নেতাজি মঞ্চে সরিয়ে নিতে বলা হয়েছে৷ সে জন্য তাদের ২৪ ঘন্টা সময় দেওয়া হয়েছে৷ বৃহস্পতিবার সকালে কেউ গেট আটকালে পুলিশ তার বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা নেবে বলে জানিয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে৷

আন্দোলনকারীরা অবশ্য চিঠি পেয়েই অনশনস্থল সরিয়ে নেয়নি৷ বরং তারা সংবাদ মাধ্যমে জানিয়ে দিয়েছেন, যে কোনও পরিস্থিতি মোকাবিলায় ছাত্ররা প্রস্তত৷

February 18: On receipt of the letter of Milon Das, an emergent meeting of the Executive Council (EC) of Assam University was convened on Tuesday. However, the meeting convened by Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, Vice Chancellor of the varsity failed to decide after more than two hours deliberation as to whether the letter of Milon Das pertains to seek apology or not.

As per sources, though Milon Das wrote many lines, but nowhere did he express any word of apology. Instead he tried to establish that the allegations heaped upon him by the University authorities are baseless. He tried to reason the fact that the allegations on the basis of which he was rusticated are not true.

It was in this backdrop that the Executive Council decided unanimously that the said letter cannot be termed as one seeking apology. As such, the order of rustication of Milon Das was also not withdrawn. The EC, however, did not nullify his letter and rather decided to seek legal opinion on it. It was resolved that once they receive legal opinion, the EC would meet once again to decide the future course of action.

So will the university remain closed? In this regard, the Executive Council demarcated a particular spot for holding any demonstration. It was decided that henceforth any sort of demonstration, agitation and the like shall have to be conducted at the premises of Netaji Mancha. The EC decided to communicate the decision to the students who are agitating in front of the main gate. The students would be asked to shift their demonstration at Netaji Mancha premises.

As per sources, the students were given a time limit of 24 hours to shift to the new venue. It was also informed that if anyone tries to keep the main gate closed on Thursday, then police action will be initiated against them.

However, the students who are on agitation did not immediately shift their venue to the place mentioned by the university authorities. Rather they informed the media that the students are prepared to face all sorts of situation.
