No decision yet on implementation of nationwide NRC: Home Ministry

February 4: The Home Ministry has said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that the government has taken no decision yet on bringing a nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) yet. The reply came in a question put forth by Lok Sabha MPs Chandan Singhand Nama Nageswara Rao. The MPs had queried:

“(a) whether the Government has any plan to introduce National Register of Citizens (NRC) all over the country;

(b) If so, the reasons thereof along with the time line fixed for implementation of NRC in the country;

(c) whether the Government is aware that NRC will put extra burden on Indian citizens;

(d) whether all the State Governments are being taken into confidence before introduction of NRC and;

(e) whether the Government has received any communications from the State Governments regarding their refusal to implement the NRC in their respective States, if so, details of such State-wise communications received?”

Minister of State for Home Affairs,  Nityanand Rai said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha that “till now, the government has not taken any decision to prepare National Register of Citizens (NRC) at the national level”. The Home Ministry has also said “question does not arise” on the questions of the modalities of a nationwide NRC and how it would put additional burden on citizens.

The clarification comes amid protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) – the new law, which the government had said, will be followed by NRC. Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in the Parliament, had made it clear that the government will bring the nationwide NRC.
