NH 06 partly open for traffic again on Tuesday night

May 17: Torrential rainfall since the last couple of days resulted in multiple landslides in National Highway (NH) No 6 connecting Silchar with Guwahati. Majority of the landslides have occurred at the East Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya. Thousands of people enroute to Silchar and Guwahati got struck due to landslides.

In East Jaintia Hills district, the route from Ratachera- Umkiang- Sonapur- Lumshnong- Khliehriat- Lad Rymbai and vice versa was open for traffic on Monday evening for light vehicles. Though the NH-6 was partially opened for light vehicles in Monday evening There, but there has been fresh Landslide in Kuliang village on NH-06 this morning.The route from Silchar- Ratachera- Khliehriat has been blocked. Efforts were on to clear the same and necessary assistance is being provided to stranded passengers.

DC East Jaintia Hills on Tuesday night said, “Landslides have been occurring daily because of the incessant rain. The district administration is continuously coordinating with the NHAI to clear the debris/boulders/trees as soon as possible. After multiple landslides in the night, the traffic was again re-opened successfully at 8 PM for at least one-way movement at a time.
The District Administration is also preparing a repository of the JCBs, Porcelain excavators and trailers present within the district to aid in faster resolution of such crises in future.”

At 11 PM on Tuesday, East Jaintia Hills Police informed that the route on NH-06 from Khliehriat to Ratachera has been partially cleared and one way vehicular movement has started. However drivers and commuters were again advised to be alert and drive cautiously. Meanwhile, after the roads were cleared vehicles have strated to ply on this route.
