NGO Prachestha organises ‘Menstrual Hygiene Awareness’ programme
Nov. 8: Continuing its social activities, NGO Prachestha comprising of all ladies members organised a ‘Menstrual Hygiene Awareness’ programme at Kanakpur Road, Silchar on last Friday. The awareness programme was attended by the women of Kanakpur Road. Health Official of Sonai Block, Dr. Mamata Devi participated as a guest speaker.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Mamata Devi said, “Women and adolescent girls using a clean menstrual management material to absorb or collect blood that can be changed in privacy as often as necessary for the duration of the menstruation period, using soap and water for washing the body as required.”
She also highlighted the importance of maintaining good hygiene during periods which results in reduced risk of urinary tract infections She said that Uuing damp and dirty menstrual clothes or using a sanitary napkin for longer than 4 hours can act as a perfect environment for growth and multiplication of harmful bacteria and yeasts. She further said that menstruation is a taboo in most societies, and this contributes to the ignorance and illiteracy on menstrual hygiene management. “Awareness and access to affordable sanitary napkins for periods can prevent reproductive complications due to Reproductive Tract Infection,” said Dr. Mamata Sinha.
On behalf of NGO Prachestha, Rakhi Roy, Aloka Deb, Pomi Deb Dutta, Omrita Sinha, Sumona Das, Debolina Paul Patoa, Tania Das, Anindita Som, Nandita Roy, Jayeeta Deb, Moushumi Adhikari Paul, Tua Roy Das and Sayani Das were present during the awareness programme.
