NCC organises voluntary blood donation camp at Women’s College, 67 units of blood collected

way2barak, Nov.27: To commemorate the 75 years of raising of the National Cadet Corps NCC@75 in conjunction with the celebrations of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav and also the 400th Birth Anniversary of Bir Lachhit Borphukan, the legendary Ahom General whose valour saved Assam in the famous battle of Saraighat, a voluntary Blood Donation Camp was organised by the 62 Assam Girls Bn NCC, Silchar in Women’s College, Silchar.

The initiative saw exuberant participation of the Cadets of 62 Assam Girls Battalion NCC & Cdts of 3 Assam NCC Bn. A total of 67 units of Blood was donated, which included 30 from 62 Assam Girls Bn NCC and 37 from 3 Assam NCCBn. 13 Cdts of 62 Assam Girls Bn NCC also donated blood in Haflong (five had already donated few days back as a show of solidarity with Civil Administration Drive to celebrate Lachit Divas). A number of Cadets had to face rejection being underage/ underweight, having low Hemoglobin count and suffering from ailments/ under medication as well as few who had already donated blood in the last three months hence ineligible to do the same.

College wise strength: 

Haflong Govt College (13 cadets), Women’s College: (07 cadets), Gurucharan College: (08 cadets),
Cachar College (04 cadets), Nehru College, Pailapool: (04 cadets), Janata College: (04 cadets), MC Das College: (01 cadets).

Sub Maj (Hony Lt) Kamal Bahadur Gurung and one PI along with 35 Cdts of 3 Assam NCC Bn donated blood at the same venue with 62 Assam Girls Bn. Total blood units donated today in Silchar & Haflong were 80 Units, excluding 05 Cadets who had already donated thus bringing up the tally to 85 units.

The Group Cdr of NCC Group Headquarters, Silchar, also visited and encouraged the Cadets by presenting them with certificates and badges to the Blood Donors and motivated those who couldn’t owing to various reasons, as well as bid adieu to Dr Manoj Kumar Paul, the Principal of Women’s College (also President of Barak Valley Volunteer Blood Donors Forum) superannuating on 30 Nov,  22.

The medical support and blood bank facilities were extended by Cachar Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Silchar under overall supervision of Dr Shabnam Bahar Barbhuiya whose team included Ms Satarupa (Counsellor), Mr Jeherul Islam (Tech Supervisor), Mr Sanju & Mr Birbahu (Technician), Ms Prostuti (GNM) & Mr Saurav (Lab Attdt).

The organising team included Sub Major Shivkaran Singh, Hav AK Mishra, Hav Arup Bora and Hav Santosh Dipale, all from 62Assam Girls Bn with active support from Dr Manoj Kumar Paul, Principal of Women’s College and President of the Barak Valley Volunteers Blood Donors Forum, who was kind enough to provide the College Auditorium for the venue. The event was also utilized to bid adieu to him after more than 3 decades of service to the nation as a teacher and mentor….and a proud blood donor himself.
