National Mathematics Day celebrated in Silchar in a befitting manner
Dec. 23: The Department of Mathematics, Gurucharan College, Silchar and Assam Academy of Mathematics Cachar District Branch have jointly celebrated the National Mathematics Day on 22 December, 2021 at the
Auditorium,Gurucharan College in a befitting manner. This day is celebrated nationwide to commemorate the birthday of the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
The inaugural session of the programme was presided over by Dr. Bibhas Deb, Principal, Gurucharan College, Silchar and Chief Patron of the organizing committee in presence of Dr. Mihir Ranjan Nath,Vice Principal, Gurucharan College and Dr. Biplab Chaudhuri, Head of the Department of Mathematics, Gurucharan College. Prof. Shanta Laishram, Professor of Mathematics, Indian Statistical Institute New Delhi, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.The dignitaries offered floral tributes in the portrait of Srinivasa Ramanujan to pay homage to the mathematical genius.
At the very outset, Dr. Biplab Chaudhuri, who is also the President of AAM Cachar District, welcomed everyone to the program and presented a summary of the events to take place. He also outlined the previous activities of the Department of Mathematics, Gurucharan College and AAM Cachar District. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mihir Ranjan Nath highlighted the importance of mathematics in various fields.
As a mark of respect to their relentless effort in mathematics education, two renowned mathematics teachers of the district SajalKanti Choudhury, Retired Assistant Teacher, Adhar Chand HS School and Debabrata Sharma, Retired Assistant Teacher, New Oxford School, Silchar were felicitated in the event. Principal, Gurucharan College also announced the adoption of two schools, namely, DNNK Girls HS School, Silchar and Happy Valley High School, Udharbond for academic mentoring by the college.
As part of the celebration, a three days Mathematics Olympiad Orientation Workshop from 22nd to 24th December has also been organized for the students of classes VIII to XII. Around hundred students from various schools and colleges have registered for the workshop. The key resource persons of the workshop are Prof. Shanta Laishram, Professor of Mathematics, Indian Statistical Institute, New Delhi, Dr. Uday Shankar Chakraborty, Assam University, Silchar, Dr. Debashish Sharma, Assistant Professor of G C College, and Rahul Paul.
The coordinator of the programme, Dr. Debashish Sharma, gave an overview of the workshop during the inaugural session. The workshop will be attended by 90 students from various schools and colleges in and around Silchar. Certificates of successful completion were presented to the students of the three months certificate course on Initiation into Mathematics Olympiads offered by the Department of Mathematics, GC College in association with Assam Academy of Mathematics, Cachar District Branch.
The session ended with a vote of thanks by Apurba Kumar Nath, Executive Member, AAM Cachar District. After the inaugural session, a popular talk was presented by Prof. Shanta Laishram on the life and works of Srinivasa Ramanujan. He also gave a presentation on career opportunities in mathematics. The three days workshop on mathematics olympiad will continue till 24 December.Students will be provided certificates after attending all the classes of the workshop.
