Narsing School marches ahead with brilliant performance by its students, an example to cherish

June 26: Sound of the bell ringing sharp at 9 in the morning is the time when teaching-learning activities kick starts in the practical laboratories of Narsing Higher Secondary School, Silchar. Teachers & students stick to the class schedule both in sun and shower. The devotion and dedication of the teachers and students has enabled Narsing School to carve a niche for itself among the academic coterie. The results of Higher Secondary Final Year declared by Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) on 25 June, 2020 provides testimony to this fact.

A common feature which gets the status of headline in media reports every year after results are declared is the dismal performance of government schools. However, this jinx was broken by the students of Narsing HS School, Silchar by their brilliant performance in Higher Secondary Examinations in 2020. It’s indeed laudable to note that in the Science stream, 41 students appeared in HS Final Exam, out of which all came out with flying colours. Out of the 41 students, 23 got 1st division, 16 passed in 2nd division and only 2 got 3rd division. The students secured 61 letters. 13 students got star marks. In Arts stream, 76 percent students passed, out of which 2 got first division and 4 letters. Further, in the vocational stream, all students passed.

This exceptional result by a government school can pose challenge to any private school or junior college of not only Cachar but the state as a whole. However, this is not the first time that Narsing HS School has performed well in the exam. The school in the yesteryear’s was indeed one which produced brilliant students. However, for a long time, it’s performance came down. But since 2015, Narsing HS School started reviving it’s pristine glory and glamour. Eminent Scientist Biman Nath, an alumni of Narsing School expressed happiness at the performance of his alma mater.

Speaking to way2barak, Ratan Paul, Principal of the school congratulated the students on their success. He said, “I joined Narsing HS School as Principal on 20 January, 2020. I would take this opportunity to thank all my teachers who devoted themselves wholeheartedly in imparting education. I assure that we would continue with this performance in the coming days. He, however, lamented the lack of proper infrastructure.” He appealed to the alumni association also to come forward for helping the school in construction of classrooms. He further thanked the SMDC President Dr. Akhil Paul, Vice President Champak Dey and other members for their active cooperation in the school management.

On an indepth analysis by the correspondent of way2barak, it came to the forefront that various steps adopted in the recent past worked as a catalyst in setting back its performance in the right track. The school has revived the intake of girls in the HS section a few years ago and that was a vital decision. Again, at present, society has got a negative impact about the government schools. Even the teachers of government or provincialised schools get their wards admitted in private institutions. However, when Krishnendu Roy, science teacher of Narsing School got his son admitted in Class XI of his own school, it really worked as a wonder. His son, Kritiman Roy passed HSLC from Holy Cross and then took admission in HS Science at Narsing School. He passed out in 2017 with 86.4 percent marks and is presently studying in NIT Silchar.

This aspect was indeed a game changer. Gradually people regained the confidence of sending their wards in Narsing School. Erstwhile Principal of this school, Somnath Deb also got his son Sibayan Deb, a district Table Tennis player admitted in HS Science, who passed out with 85 percent. Another former teacher of Narsing HS School, Bidyavati Hanse Barua also set an example by admitting his son Hrishov in his own school, who also passed with 84 percent marks. Another teacher of the school, Aparna Chakraborty has also admitted her ward in the same school. Now, the examples set by the teachers have got a positive influence and scholars like Prof. Dipendu Das, Dean, Assam University also admitted his daughter in HS Science in Narsing School who passed with 89 percent marks. Prof. Joydeep Bhattacharjee, of G.C. also admitted his girl in Narsing School, who later on passed HS in 1st division with 4 letters. The list is ever expanding.

Speaking to way2barak, Krishnendu Roy, science teacher informed that, “The school is connected through the Embibe platform, which imparts free online training to the students for medical and engineering entrance examination. They also impart online training to the teachers. This is indeed of great help to the students for shaping their career. The school further provides free textbooks. The decision to admit girls in HS helped the school to a great extent. Eminent scholar of Physics, Sri Jagadish Chakraborty was an inspiration in this connection. But the lead role in this aspect was taken by Samir Kumar Das & Subrata Chandra Nath. At present, many of our students are admitted in various NITs and Medical Colleges. Moreover, the school provides multiple scholarships given by its teachers, alumni and others to the good performers every year.”

Indeed, the hard work and dedication put in by Narsing HS School has roped in success and this has instilled confidence among the parents to get their wards admitted over there. Today leaving aside private brand of institutions, parents are eagerly getting their sons and daughters admitted in Narsing HS School. If other government schools follows the footsteps of Narsing HS School, then that day will not be far when no longer parents will worry about spending fat amount and admit their wards in private junior colleges. Government needs to come up in improving the physical infrastructure of the 105-year old school, which then would run in the track with renewed pace and vigour.
