সত্তরোর্ধ্ব বৃদ্ধা আকল নমঃশূদ্রের জন্য ৫০ কেজি চাল নিয়ে গিয়েছে শিলচরের নান্দনিক সাংস্কৃতিক সংস্থা। সঙ্গে ডাল-তেল-নুন সহ নিত্যপ্রয়োজনীয় সামগ্রী। শিলচর থেকে কাটিগড়ার রাজাটিলা গাড়িতে। সেখান থেকে সংস্থার উপদেষ্টা দীপঙ্কর কর গেলেন কাঁদা-পথ আর সাঁকো বেয়ে। সদস্য সুশান্ত পালচৌধুরী ও অমৃত মজুমদারকে নিয়ে সম্পাদক তমাল বণিক নৌকোয় পৌঁছালেন। তাঁরা হরিটিকর যাচ্ছেন জেনেই পার্থসারথি দাস (শুভ) ১ হাজার টাকা বার করে দিলেন। বললেন, অর্জুনের মাকে দেবেন।

অর্জুন নমঃশূদ্র বরাক উপত্যকার প্রায় সকলের পরিচিত। ডি ভোটার মামলায় চরম হতাশ হয়ে ২০১২ সালের ৮ জুন আত্মঘাতী হয়েছিলেন। সে থেকে অসহায়ত্ব গ্রাস করে গোটা পরিবারকে। কারণ দিনমজুর অর্জুনই ছিলেন পরিবারের একমাত্র উপার্জনকারী সদস্য। তাঁর মৃত্যুর পর, বলতে গেলে, দু-বেলা দু-মুঠো খাবারের সন্ধানে বেরিয়ে পড়েছিলেন সবাই। স্ত্রী বাসনা শ্রীগোরীতে অন্যের বাড়ি কাজ করেন। সাত বছরের ছোট ছেলেটি তাঁর সঙ্গে থাকে। বড় ছেলে বিজন চার বছর ধরে রাজাটিলায় এক কাপড়ের দোকানে কাজ করে। এখনও তার বয়স ১৪ পেরোয়নি। মেজ ছেলে সুজন ও একমাত্র মেয়ে শোভা পাড়াতেই এক বাড়িতে থাকে। কাজকর্ম করে, ফাঁকে পড়েও।

আর অর্জুনের মা আকলদেবী? পড়শিরা দিলেই পেটে কিছু জোটে। নইলে ‘আজও একাদশী’ ভেবে কাটিয়ে দেন। কাঁদতে কাঁদতে আকলদেবী বললেন, ‘এমনটা হওয়ার কথা ছিল না আমার। খুব ভাল অবস্থা না থাকলেও ছিল বিলের অংশীদারি, ৪ কাঠা জমিও। ডি ভোটারের নোটিশ সব কেড়ে নিয়েছে।’ মামলা লড়ার জন্য প্রথমে ২ কাঠা জমি বন্ধক দেন। বাকি জমি যায় অর্জুনের শ্রাদ্ধ-শান্তির জন্য। বিলের অংশীদারিটাও পরে বন্ধক দিয়ে এখন তিনি সর্বস্বান্ত।

পার্থবাবুর দান সহ মোট দেড় হাজার টাকা তাঁর হাতে তুলে দিয়ে তমালবাবুরা বলে আসেন, অন্তত কিছুটা বন্ধক ছাড়ানোর জন্য কী করা যায় দেখবেন তাঁরা। গত ৬ বছরে এমন ভরসার কথা কেউ আর বলেননি তাঁকে। তাঁর ছেলের ‘আত্মবলিদান’-কে সামনে রেখেই ২০১৪-র লোকসভা নির্বাচনের আগে বরাকের ভোট চেয়েছিলেন নরেন্দ্র মোদি। সর্বানন্দ সোনোয়াল পরে ১০ হাজার টাকা দিয়ে বলেছিলেন, নিয়মিত কিছু টাকা পাওয়ার ব্যবস্থা করবেন। কিন্তু কোথায় কী! বর্তমান বিজেপি বিধায়ক অমরচাঁদ জৈনের অর্জুন নমঃশূদ্রের কথা মনে করতেই সময় কেটে যায় অনেকটা।

Nandanik Cultural organization of Silchar donated 50 kg rice, pulses, salt, oil and other essential commodities to 70 plus old lady Akol Namasudra. The members of Nandanik went from Silchar to Rajatila in Katigorah by car. From there, Dipankar Chanda, advisor of Nandanik went on foot through the muddy serpentine way. Tamal Kanti Banik, the Secretary of Nandanik along with Susanta Paul Choudhury and Amrit Majumdar reached by boat. On learning that team Nandanik is going to Haritikor, Partha Sarathi Das (Subho) gave Rs.1000 for the mother of Arjun.

Arjun Namasudra is known to almost all people of Barak Valley. After being labeled as D Voter, Arjun went around Foreigners Tribunal to get himself extricated from this allegation. However, unable to bear the burden of tension and pressure, Arjun became frustrated in life and committed suicide on January 8, 2012. Since then, the family is in the grip of untold misery. Day labourer Arjun was the only earning member in the family. His death has compelled his family members to disperse in quest of earning two square meals a day. His wife Basana Namasudra works as domestic help in a house at Srigouri. Her younger son aged 7 stays with her. Her elder son Bijon, aged around 13 works in a cloth store at Rajatila since last four years. Her second son Sujan and only daughter Shova stays at another person’s house in their locality. Sujan takes care of the cows in his neighbours house and also studies when he finds opportunity.

Arjun’s mother Akol  Namasudra eats if her neighbours’ give her food or else she had to remain empty stomach. While speaking to team Nandanik, she was all in tears. She said, “I was not supposed to face such ordeal. Though not well-to-do, yet we had 4 kathas of land from where we used to get grains. We also had share in the adjacent ‘beel’ (wetland) from where we used to get Rupees Fifteen thousand per annum by selling fish. But the D voter notice has snatched away everything from our lives.” Initially, they gave half of their land as mortgage to meet the expenses of the case at Foreigners Tribunal. After Arjun’s death, the remaining portion of the land was again given mortgage for performing his last rites and ‘shraddha’ ceremony. Finally, she also had to part with the share of the ‘beel’ (wetland). It was too given as mortgage for a very tiny sum. “I lost everything. I lost my only son, I lost my land. My whole family is scattered now in search of livelihood. Survival has become a tough task for us now.” This is how Akol Namasudra narrated her woe.

Team Nandanik apart from the giving 50 kg rice, pulses, oil, salt and other essential commodities, also gave Akol Namasudra a cash amount of Rs.1500. Secretary of Nandanik, Tamal Kanti Banik, Secretary of Nandanik assured the helpless lady that they would devise ways and means so that she could atleast get back some portion of her mortgaged land. She with tears in her eyes said that in the last 6 years none has given her such kind of positive assurance. In the backdrop of the ‘self-sacrifice’ of her son, Narendra Modi sought votes from the people of this valley in 2014. Later on Sarbananda Sonowal assisted her with an amount of Rs.10,000 and promised to make provision for providing her regular financial help. But all these political promises were made to be broken. Even no help was provided by the present local BJP MLA Amarchand Jain. Moreover, Mr. Jain has to stress his memory to recall even the name of Arjun Namasudra.
