Myanmar court jails ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi for 4 years
Dec. 6: Ousted Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to four years of prison. A Myanmar court found her guilty of inciting dissent against the military and breaching Covid-19 rules. Suu Kyi has around 11 charges levied against her. She was leading an elected civil government before being ousted by a military coup in February.
The 76-year-old has been slapped with an array of charges, including multiple counts of corruption and violating the official secrets act. Ms Suu Kyi’s lawyers, who had been the sole source of information on the legal proceedings, have also been served with gag orders forbidding them from releasing information. Little has been seen or heard of her apart from her brief court appearances.
Though her international stature diminished following a wave of military violence targeting the country’s marginalised Muslim Rohingya community, Aung San Suu Kyi, who previously spent a total of 15 years in detention campaigning against military rule, is widely revered domestically as an icon of democracy.
