MP Dr Rajdeep Roy proposes Foreign Trade hub under IIFT to start at Assam University

Ministry of Commerce & Industry and also IIFT New Delhi has accorded positive response to Dr Roy

Dec. 29: Academic courses in foreign trade has got huge potential in the present job market. However, it’s an irony that no such standardized courses are run anywhere in the Northeastern region of our country. Recently, on the sidelines of the winter session of the parliament, Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy met Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, in New Delhi wherein a threadbare discussion took place between them regarding starting of academic courses in foreign trade in Assam University.

This was stated by Dr Rajdeep Roy during a press briefing at his residence in Silchar on Tuesday. Dr Roy informed that he met the Union Minister of Commerce & Industry on 25 December and discussed the possibility of setting up a hub of foreign trade in Silchar. He said, “It was a very fruitful discussion and the hon’ble minister Piyush Goyalji sent me to meet the Vice Chancellor of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi. As such, I met the Vice Chancellor of IIFT and put before him the verbal proposal. It was a very fruitful discussion, where the Vice Chancellor asked me to send a formal proposal from Assam University, Silchar for opening a hub of foreign trade there which will be started under the aegis of IIFT, New Delhi.”

Dr Rajdeep Roy further informed that he has already worked out that once Assam University sends the proposal for setting up a foreign trade hub in its Silchar campus under IIFT Exchange Programme, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry and also IIFT New Delhi will positively approve the proposal. The proposal will be worked out jointly by MP Dr Roy and Assam University authorities.

“Our students though has enough potential but does not have the know how of foreign trade in the actual sense of the term. We are surrounded by some of the nations with whom bulk of foreign trade can be carried out. But that requires academic expertise and know-how. I firmly believe that once the academic course on Foreign Trade under the aegis of IIFT, New Delhi is started here in Assam University, more and more students will be able to gain knowledge and make a lucrative career out of it. This in turn will also improve the economy of the region,” added Dr Roy.

It needs mention here that the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) is an autonomous business school, located in New Delhi, India. The institute was established as a Centre of Excellence in International Trade & Business in 1963 by Government of India. As of 2021, it is as an autonomous educational institute under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. It was granted “Deemed to be University” status in 2002. The National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) has recognized IIFT as Grade ‘A’ Institution in 2005 as well as in 2015.

IIFT Exchange Programme is an outcome of the institute’s academic collaboration with institutions across the world. These collaborations are mainly for student, faculty exchange programmes, joint collaborations on research and various other capacity building exercises. IIFT has developed relations with many international organizations by signing MoUs and participating in their activities or taking collaborative initiatives.
