Monday Scare: Biggest single day spike of 156 COVID-19 cases in Assam

May 25: Monday was indeed a very tough day for Assam as the coronavirus positive cases in the state saw its all time highest spike till now. A total of 156 COVID-19 positive cases were reported from various parts of the state on Monday, which sent a chill of horror throughout the state. As people stranded outside the state started to pour in, the number of coronavirus cases has been on the rise. It is quite obvious, when people from the hotspots are travelling back to their home states, there will definitely be a spike in the number of positive cases. The total number of COVID-19 positive cases in Assam on Monday stands at 548. However, the number of active cases are 479.

The total number of COVID-19 positive cases in the state was 392 on 24 May. But on 25 May, the numbers went on increasing almost the whole day. All eyes seemed to be on the twitter page of State Health Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. Here is the complete sequence of how the positive cases were reported on 25 May.

1. 25 May, 8.15 AM: 35 new cases. They are 18 from Golaghat, 6 Kokrajhar quarantine centre, 5 karimganj, 2 Tinsukia, 2 Sivasagar, 1 Jorhat, 1 Dhemaji.
2. 25 May, 1.15 PM: 39 new cases. They are 35 from Golaghat, 3 Dhemaji, 1 Nagaon.
3. 25 May, 5.50 PM: 48 new cases. They are 16 from Karimganj, 8 Lakhimpur, 8 Ghy Qrnt, 5 Cachar, 4 Hailakandi, 3 South Salmara, 2 Nalbari, 1 each Morigaon / Goalpara.
4. 25 May, 8.30 PM: 12 new cases. They are 9 from Lakhimpur and 3 from Sivasagar.
5. 25 May, 10:10 PM: 13 new cases. They are 7 from Kamrup Metro and 6 from Golaghat.
6. 25 May, 11.00 PM: 09 new cases. All of them are from Barpeta.

With the addition of 156 new cases, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Assam went upto 548. Out of this,62 persons were already discharged, 4 of them died, while 3 were migrated. That means, at present, there are 479 active cases in Assam. As the numbers are soaring up at an alarming rate, it’s essential for the people to stay at home as far as possible, follow social distancing and hygiene norms. Further, to stay safe, people must also follow government advisory of wearing face masks and washing hands frequently with soap.

With flight services resuming on Monday and more trains carrying stranded people expected to arrive in the coming days, the situation in Assam seems to be really tough in the coming days. State Health Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, however, said that the government is fully prepared to face the situation.
