December 11: Trends for the 40-member Assembly by the evening on December 11 give the Mizo national Front (MNF) close to 26 seats, crossing the mid-way mark of 21 in the 40-strong state Assembly. MNF is bouncing back to power after a decade. Mizo National Front President Zoramthanga is touted to take over the chief-ministership of Mizoram from Congress’ Lal Thanhawla. Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla has submitted his resignation to the Governor K Rajasekharan. The magic figure in Mizoram State Assembly is 21.
A delegation of Mizo National Front (MNF) led by its President Zoramthanga met Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan after the party won 26 seats in the state Assembly polls.
In a tweet, Zoramthanga, President of Mizo National Front(MNF) wrote: “Since I am going to form the govt now my first priorities will be three things—to impose a prohibition on liquor, repair roads & implement Social Economic Development Programme (SEDP) which is our flagship programme.” He further stated that We will not have any coalition government either with BJP or any other way because my party can form the government on its own. We have got 26 seats out of 40. We’re a part of NEDA (North-East Democratic Alliance) and NDA, but we wouldn’t like to join Congress or UPA.
The only seat the BJP won was Tuichawng, where BD Chakma defeated RM Chakma of the MNF. This is the first time the BJP will have a member in the Mizoram Assembly. BD Chakma was a minister in the Congress government before he switched to the BJP.
Meanwhile, Members and workers of Mizo National Front celebrate at party headquarters in Aizawl.
