MLA Krishnendu Paul demands NIA enquiry over the recent incident of violence in Shillong

way2barak, Oct.31: Patharkandi MLA Krishnendu Paul expressed deep concern on the recent incident of violence in Shillong, Meghalaya when several innocent people (belonging to non-tribal fraternity) were assaulted during a rally against unemployment organised by the Federation of Khasi Jainita and Garo People (FKJGP). Besides, vehicles and properties were vandalised and even media persons were reportedly assaulted as well. It is in this backdrop that MLA Paul submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Assam regarding conducting an NIA enquiry over the recent incident of violence in Shillong.

In the memorandum MLA Patharkandi wrote, “The recent incident of attack on the innocent people, non-Tribals in particular, is not a sudden unfortunate incident, but a continuation of a series of unfortunate incidents, contributed by several different organisations from time to time. This incident has once again scratched the unfortunate history of incidents of conflict of the yesteryears in Meghalaya.”

In this backdrop, with deep pain and concern, he added, “I would like to mention that many non-Tribal people including Assamese, Bengalis ,Punjabis, Marwaris, Biharis who are there in Meghalaya to work and earn their livelihood are infact living in great jeopardy. Under the circumstances, I am writing to you with an earnest plea to intervene in the matter of grace concern and take some steps so that such lawlessness and mayhem can be addressed and fixed and an environment of peace and brethren feelings for the larger interest could be restored at the earliest in Meghalaya. In this regard I am requesting before your kind honour to conduct an NIA Enquiry over the aforesaid issue that is continuously happening in Meghalaya.”
