MLA Kamalakhya sits on protest outside Assam Assembly to protest of construction of medical college at Ratabari
way2barak, Dec.24: The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam Government is contemplating to construct medical college at Ratabari in Karimganj district. However, this decision of the government has been protested by the Congress. The issue was raised earlier too by North Karimganj Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha.
On Saturday, MLA Dey Purkayastha sat on protest outside the Assam Legislative Assembly during the ongoing winter session as a mark of protest against the government’s decision of constructing the new medical college at Ratabari constituency in Karimganj district. He stated that as per the guidelines of National Medical Commission (NMC), medical college should be constructed within 10 km radius of district hospital. However, he added that in Karimganj, the proposed medical college will be constructed around 56 km away from the district hospital. “This is violation of the norms of NMC and so I have sat here in protest,” said MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha.
During his sit-in protest, MLA Dey Purkayastha was holding a placard, which read, “On demand for shifting the location of Karimganj Medical College from interior place of the district to a location nearby National Highway and to establish it following NMC guidelines.”
