Members of Gurkha & Tiwa militant groups UGPO & TLA laid down arms to join the mainstream

Jan. 27: In a significant development, militants belonging to the United Gorkha Peoples’ Organization (UGPO) and Tiwa Liberation Army (TLA) on Thursday formally surrendered before Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Informing this, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “GOA is relentlessly pursuing vision of Hon PM Sri @narendramodi of lasting peace in Assam. Glad that 169 ex-members of Gurkha & Tiwa militant groups UGPO & TLA laid down arms today to join the mainstream. I was present along with esteemed colleagues & officials.”

The Chief Minister further stated, “Inspired by PM and Hon HM Sri @AmitShah, in last two years we’ve managed to have all major militants groups surrender arms, and join the mainstream. I urge ULFA (I) & KLO, two remaining major extremist groups, to come forward & sit in peace talks with GoI.”

“Distributed grants to former members of RNLF, UPRF, NLFB, NSLA, ADF. We are committed to rehabilitate all who laid down arms before May 10. Surrendered militants must utilize the financial grants judiciously, and engage in entrepreneurship & agriculture to lead a dignified life,” stated the Chief Minister of Assam.
