Massive waterlogging in Guwahati

way2barak, 5 August : Guwahati came to a standstill today as heavy rains led to massive waterlogging, disrupting normal life and creating chaos across multiple areas. Continuous rainfall throughout the afternoon overwhelmed the city’s drainage system, resulting in widespread flooding.

Several key areas, including Chanmari, Noonmati, Bamunimaidan, GS Road, Ulubari, Guwahati Club, Ambari, Rukmini Gaon, Hatigaon, Beltola, Ganeshguri, Gandhibasti, Rajgarh, Lachit Nagar, and others, were submerged under water. The flooding led to severe traffic jams and made many roads blocked, leaving commuters stranded and residents struggling to cope with the deluge.

The situation has highlighted the city’s ongoing struggle with waterlogging, despite efforts by the government to improve drainage infrastructure. The Guwahati Development Department, under Minister Ashok Singhal, has made several attempts to address the issue, including the use of advanced machinery to drain the sewers. However, these measures have proven insufficient in preventing the recurring problem of artificial floods.

An official from DDMA said, “Measures have been taken for flood prevention, but even in areas with the best sewerage systems, it takes at least an hour for the floodwaters to recede”
