Massive operation on to nab gang of dacoits in Hailakandi
May 2: The Hailakandi district police has launched a massive combing operation to nab the gang of dacoits involved in a daring burglary at the residence of a former CRPF jawan at Katakhal under Panchgram Police Station. A gang of 10-12 dacoits armed with weapons barged into the residence of former CRPF jawan Nirod Chandra Das at around 1 am of Tuesday and decamped with cash worth Rs one and a half lakh and jewellery ornaments. As the family members of the former jawan tried to resist the dacoits from fleeing, they opened fire seriously injuring one of his sons. Nandakumar Das, aged 38, with gun wounds had to be admitted at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
On hearing about the incident, OC of Panchgram Police Station, Chittaranjan Nath rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. Sniffer dogs were also pressed into service. Later, Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath, DIG, Southern Range, Dilip Kumar Dey, Additional SP, Kulendra Nath Deka and Circle Officer, Algapur, Pradip Gupta reached the site of the incident.
Meanwhile, the police has made some headway into the burglary case with one arrest being made and four persons picked up for interrogation. “Search operation is going on to nab the culprits,” said SP, Nath. Following a sense of insecurity and demand for patrolling during night hours in view of the lockdown from the local residents of Katakhal and adjoining Panchgram areas, security has been beefed up by the police authorities. “Adequate security has been provided to instill security among the local people,” added Nath.
