Liquor prices likely to go up in 4 North Eastern states, indicates Himanta

May 7: Assam along with the neighbouring states of Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland are contemplating to increase liquor taxes very soon. In this connection, Assam government is in touch with the 3 other North Eastern states. A cabinet meeting in this regard will be held on 8 May. This will be done only if the 3 other states mentioned here gives their consent to this issue.

If all agrees upon, then an’ integrated structure’ will be formed. This was informed by State Finance Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. during a press briefing in Guwahati on Thursday. The minister also said, there will be no benefit if Assam alone increases liquor tax. Such hike will only be effective when the neighbouring states of Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland also agrees to do so. Recently, Delhi government imposed a 70 percent tax on the MRP in case of liquor.
