‘Light less earthen lamps this Diwali,’ says BJP state chief Bhabesh Kalita; But why?
Nov. 1: A bizarre statement of Assam State BJP President Bhavesh Kalita is doing the rounds on social media. The party chief while talking to newsmen on Monday urged the people of the state to celebrate Diwali only by lighting earthen lamp rather than to burn crackers. He stressed that people should celebrate green Diwali.
He categorically stated that the people should refrain from using Chinese lights and crackers this Diwali and should rather light earthen lamps (diya). Just then, a journalist asked Bhavesh Kalita about the rise in price of mustard oil, which is used for lighting earthen lamps. To this, the BJP state President replied, “If someone have lighten 50 earthen lamps earlier, this year they would lit 10 diyas, but the celebration will be on.”
Various memes were made by netizens with this statement of Mr Kalita. One social media user wrote, “What a splendid solution Sirji!! The price of rice has also increased, so you should also ask the people to eat less rice.”
Infact, this is not the 1st time that he has come with such a bizarre statement. In the context of rising fuel prices, Bhavesh Kalita remarked after petrol prices touch Rs 200, he will urge the state government to consider tripling on two-wheelers as that would save a lot of petrol!
